VIDEO: THE MOST EXPENSIVE BEACH IN LAGOS

It is claimed to be one of the most expensive beaches in the city of Lagos - Oniru beach may not compare to the sun and sand of some of the world's best beaches - but has a Nigerian charm that nowhere else can match.

"This is one of the best places where everything happens!" says Tommy Iro, a musician, event organiser and manager of Oniru beach.

Lagos is a coastal city on the edge of the Atlantic ocean. However, unlike many of the world's tourist beach destinations, such as the Indian ocean or East Africa, the waves and sand of Lagos beaches are not so relaxing but have a charm all of their own and reflect the hustle and character of Lagos.
Last year, Sola Oniru, the owner of the private beach spent an estimated 15million Naira ($90,000) on investment of new bars, beach houses, life guards and another hall. In a recent interview in the Vanguard newspaper, Oniru described tourism as "a major player in growing the economy... We will ensure that Lagos becomes one of the most attractive tourist centres in the world."

In the last few years, the Lagos state have invested in a barrier down the Lagos coastline to protect it from erosion and flooding. And now businesses are opening up across the beach. Families and friends go during the day, and party time is at night!

"The challenge is how to manage the crowd... you have to be patient," says Tommy. And then to explain the cost of entering the private beach: "It's expensive because you are paying for the beach, teh arrangement, the security, the guides, teh music - we want everyone to enjoy. We want you to come with your parents, your friends, everybody."
